Covert Ops…in 140 Characters or Less!
Everyone in the world know about the United States military’s infamous Navy SEALs and their mastery of all cutting edge warfare skills. We do not know the details but we just know that they are all the best of the best. The reason we do not know is because they frequently operate in darkness and disguise. So much so that they are often thought to be invisible.
However, as technology has evolved, so has our methods of communication. It amazes me that an innocent Twitter user who couldn’t sleep was unknowingly broadcasting the play by play of the “covert” operation to kill the #1 terrorist, Osama bin Laden, to his followers and the world.
Stop for a minute to really think about it.
Personally, I think this it is truly amazing. THAT is the power of social media! To pick just a few of his tweets, user @ReallyVirtual tweeted:
- That the helicopters flying above were odd for that time of night
- The explosion of the broken helicopter set off by the SEALs as they were leaving
- Finally he predicted that Obama’s late night speech and the oddities around him may have been connected.
There you have it: play by play coverage of covert Navy SEAL operations, that were top secret at the time, were being published to the world on Twitter in near real time, all in 140 characters or less. I repeat…THAT is the power of social media.
